A quick update for those scouring the web for info on PSP happenings. the PSP-3000 is set to be released in the US in 2 weeks, and packs some cool new features. Also, a new firmware version 5 is also slated for release soon, read on for more info...

Firstly, all about the new PSP-3000, here is a pic of the new device:

As you can see, apart from the PS button (Replacing the 'Home' Button) and a sleek finish, the externals look much the same. It is what is on the inside that counts this time around. Our first hint of something new is the inbuilt mic you can see below the screen to the right of the volume + control. This will make Skype much easier on the PSP, and this is slated to be installed 'out of the box'.

Secondly, the PSP contains 64Mb of RAM, same as the PSP-Slim varieties, meaning more programs will be able to be developed to utilise the new mic, better graphics etc.

The screen has been improved, with a higher refresh rate, and purportedly more colour definition, and much brighter. The new LCD display has five times the contrast ratio, twice the color range and responds twice as fast as its predecessor. Their had been initial concerns about the brightness chewing up the battery, however Sony spokespeople have now stated that battery life will be 'comparable' to that of the current PSP range.

In short the upgrades are; a built-in microphone, much better TFT screen, and a new (design at least) button. Maybe a good purchase, 1 - if your current PSP is a bit worse for ware, 2 - Sony release some PSP-3000 'only' super-sweet games, or 3 - you just have to Skype on the run!

In another development, it has been mentioned around the interwebs that Sony is putting together another firmware release for the PSP aka version 5.

The new firmware will reportedly add RSS reading abilities (this time around including text articles), and direct access to the PSN (PlayStation Network) meaning downloadable content, games, movies, music and whatever else Sony decide to market to the PSP.

Things are looking rosy for those in the PSP game.... I wonder how long after Sony's release it will take for the hackers to get their release out supporting homebrew et al.....
