With the advent of Windows Vista, Defrag has become a mysterious beast indeed. Set to an automatic schedule by default and no progress screen is offered, it is very hard to get an idea of how windows is defragmenting your hard drive. Towards this end, today I will be introducing two Freeware Defrag Programs. Both are advanced versions of Windows' simple consolidation defrag, and both have a unique way of displaying their progress.
First up today is Auslogics Disk Defrag, this one is offered as a freeware download, as a standalone program, and also comes as part of the BoostSpeed 4 software suite for $29.95 (includes Registry Defrag, Disk Cleanup and Internet and Memory Optimizer). Today I will be focussing on the Defrag Freeware. The software is fairly simple, and is reminiscent of the windows XP defrag screen, however it has one particular advantage in settings where you can set the program to remove temp files before defrag, removing a step from the traditional: Disk Cleanup -> Disk Defrag Process. It is a high speed defragger and gives a concise read out when it has finished as to how much fragmentation before and after the process was run. Auslogics Disk Defrag Screenshot: A recently released freeware Defrag program which seems to be the best out there at the moment is Ultimate Defrag Freeware Edition, this is the creme de la creme of freeware defrag programs. Not only does it display a representative drive map (see screenshot below) it also offers several defrag options, ranging from Consolidation (fairly traditional) to performance, whereby it puts your most recently/commonly used files on the outer edge of the disc, where the disc reads the fastest! If you are looking for a simple interface which does the basics, quickly and without many settings, then Auslogics is all you will need. If what you are really looking for is a geeky interface, heaps of options, and a tried and tested product which is now FREEWARE! then I can happily recommend to you Ultimate Defrag Freeware Edition. it is truly 1337! Starting with marketing is easy once you have a hosting deal and the web design is out of way too. The best way to go for it is the pay per click way.
