So the Asus Eee 1000H is now available at retailers in Australia. This is basically the 901 with a 10 inch screen, slightly bigger keyboard, and a traditional 80Gb notebook hard drive. To me this is a departure from the initial ideals of the Eee, reducing battery life with the larger screen and hard drive as opposed to the more energy frugal SSD. I will be going with the 901 for the ultimate ultra portable. If I wanted a 10 incher with the standard HDD, I'd probably have got a Wind.

News from around the interwebs (prices are $AUD)

Taiwanese hardware vendor Asus has added further enhancements to its new generation Eee PC equipping it with Intel’s Atom processor, a 10 inch display and 1024x600 (WSVGA) resolution.

The Eee PC 1000H is kitted out with Super Hybrid Engine technology to prolong battery lifespan. With the Super Hybrid Engine users can adjust CPU frequency, voltage and LCD brightness to minimise system noise and energy consumption, claimed the hardware vendor.

Other features of the Eee PC 1000H: 80GB HDD includes; 1.3M pixel webcam; built-in stereo speakers and microphone; plus 3 x USB ports; and with Microsoft Windows XP operating system.

The Eee PC 1000H is now available in two colours - Pearl White and Shine Black with a recommended retail price of $699 including GST through Asus’ Eee PC resellers. (CRN)

"It’s horses for courses: if you need fantastic portability, these small subnotebooks are very, very appealing. If you’re mainly going to use a computer at home on a desk, almost always plugged into mains power, you’re likely better off getting a larger laptop model for a similar price."(ITWire)

In announcing the new model, ASUS made no mention of Linux, only stating the 1000H will ship with the Microsoft Windows XP operating system. This is in stark contrast to the noise ASUS made when the first Linux-powered Eee PCs burst onto the notebook scene last year.

When asked why the new 1000H only ships with Windows XP a spokesperson for ASUS said the reason is "mainly due to high consumer demand for the familiar Microsoft [operating system], particularly since [the 1000H] is available through retail only".

"For those who want Linux, it can be easily and freely installed on this Windows version anyway," the spokesperson said. So there, the Eee PC is now not unlike any other Windows XP notebook that Linux can be installed on at home. (Techworld)
