Here it is folders, the NVidia GPU Folding Client for Folding@Home, first a leaked Beta, now officially available on Stanford's F@H page (link is here). This client will allow you to fold units and get credit by using the Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) on your Video Card This new software, based on NVidia's CUDA architecture will allow you to crunch a whole lot more units, with the same hardware. Please note this is only compatible with the following NVidia Chipsets:
| | NVIDIA CUDA-enabled products can help accelerate the most demanding tasks—from video and audio encoding to oil and gas exploration, product design, medical imaging, and scientific research. Many CUDA programs require at least 256 MB of memory attached to the GPU. Please check your system’s specifications to ensure the GPU has enough memory to run CUDA programs.
Thanks to NVidia for above Chart |
So, if you have one of the above, you are in luck, thankfully I have a 8600M GS in my Benq S41 Joybook, so I am good to go. Here are the steps I followed to get it all working: - Download NVidia CUDA Compatible drivers
- Download CUDA Toolkit
- Download CUDA SDK (All three can be obtained here)
- Before installing NVidia Drivers I changed out the NV_Disp.inf file (For laptop compatibility)
- Install the above 3 in order, then install the Folding at Home GPU Beta.
- Install Fahmon (optional) to check your Points per day output (PPD)
Here is a screenshot of my GPU 'Crunching' away:
Here is my screenshot of FahMon, look how good the ourput is compared to CPU: (1 Core of my c2d Merom T7500 CPU) and AMD CPU: (1 Core of an X2-4200+) this seems pretty good!
So, if you are keen on folding and helping to find a cure for diseases, please include your CUDA compatible NVidia Graphics Card in the mix! Please fold for Team 24 (Overclockers Australia) if you want to combine your efforts with mine, use the user name andrewchapman.net I have overclocked my 8600M GS to get the best gaming and folding results possible, if you want more details on my overclocking exploits, please see my 'Overclocking the 8600M GS' Article. - Links of interest - computer virus removal |
